Where's MY American Dream?

Where's MY American Dream?
Hard Work, Determination Aren’t Necessarily Enough Any More
From the NCCP: National Center for Children in Proverty Website (www.nccp.org)

New York City – One reason the ubiquitous “change” mantra of the 2008 White House race resonates, particularly for families struggling to make ends meet, is that the American Dream is increasingly out of reach, say researchers at Columbia University’s National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP).

“Stagnant incomes combined with the high cost of basic necessities have made it difficult for families to save, and many middle- and low-income families alike have taken on crippling amounts of debt just to get by,” says Nancy K. Cauthen, deputy director at NCCP – part of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia. “Too many families are but one crisis – a serious illness, job loss, divorce – away from financial devastation.”

According to research synthesized at NCCP, economic inequality in America has been on the rise since the 1970s; income inequality has reached historic levels. The income share of the top one percent of earners is at its highest level since 1929. In 2007, income increased by about $180,000 for the top one percent of Americans, compared to only $400 for middle-income Americans, and $200 for lower-income Americans.

“Economic mobility – the likelihood of moving from one income group to another – is on the decline in the US,” says Cauthen. “Although we Americans like to believe that opportunity is equally available to all, some groups find it harder to get ahead than others.”

Striving African American families, for example, have found upward mobility especially difficult to achieve and are far more vulnerable than whites to downward mobility, says Cauthen. The wealth gap between blacks and whites – black families have been found to have one-tenth the net worth of white families – is largely responsible.

Each year, child poverty reduces economic output by about 1.3 percent of GDP, and costs the US $500 billion a year in lost productivity in the labor force and spending on health care and the criminal justice system. For children who experience severe or chronic economic hardship, the future can seem particularly bleak.

“Poverty limits children’s potential and hinders our nation’s ability to compete in the global economy,” says Cauthen. “American students, on average, rank behind students in other industrialized nations, particularly in key areas such as math and science. America’s ability to compete globally will be severely hindered if many of our children are not as academically prepared as their peers in other nations.”

What all of these trends reveal, says Cauthen, is that “the American Dream is increasingly out of reach for many families. The promise that hard work and determination will be rewarded has become an increasingly empty promise in 21st century America. It is in the best interest of our nation to see that the American Dream, an ideal so fundamental to our collective identity, be restored.”

Throughout our countless discussions of the American Dream in class, how does this piece resonate with you? How are poverty, education, and upward mobility all connected in our pursuit of the American Dream? Speak on it! I want to hear your opinion on the issues affecting the world in which WE ALL live.

  1. we all want education.. none of us want to be in poverty but many of us dont know what to do so that they get a good eduaction and not being in poverty. i agree with what Cauthen said about how the A.D. is out of reach for many of us.... soo i thjink we need it back in our reach so we can acheive our highest and make it a better generation!

  2. I now see how poverty and upward mobility are connected. I do agree that just because you work hard doesnt necessarily promise that you will be rewarded. Sometimes you do all the hard work for nothing, which is extremely unfortunate. I also agree with Cauthlen in saying that the American Dream is out of reach for many people. Im not sure what needs to be done so that the Dream is attainable for all Americans, but something needs to be done.

  3. The state of poverty and education connect to the American dream, because when you want to go to college and you don't have enough money to do what you want, that's when poverty comes in play. It seems like you have to have money either way, to go to school and to work because your job may require a specific uniform that you have to wear. So, how do you live the American dream without money? Therefore the American dream is totally out of reach for some of us.

  4. This is a very informative article. Most people today do not know how easy it is for us as Americans to let our american dream be deferred. I believe that we as students need to take back our power and get the educaion we deserve. I agree with Nancy Cauthlen as well because we as students were told we have the same opportunites as everyone else to get and education but it actuality some of us do not. She gave a perfect example using children in Africa. Their resources limit them from getting the proper education. By the rate of the income I believe that if we do not work hard enough to reach the american dream we will be drawn toward the lifestyle of being in proverty.

  5. To get to the American Dream you would need money because if kids dont have the proper materials they need for school then they would behind or further behind then we already are

  6. I believe that the American Dream does not work hard enough because if kids don't have the proper materials for their school they will fall behind. And we will be drawn toward the lifestyle of being in proverty for American Dream.

  7. This article just restated everything i have in my essay and more. That the new American dream is hard to reach because you need money to get their. Who say's the people in the middle class are not happy with their life. The real American dream is happiness but it has been "recalibrate" over time so that you need tons of money to reach it. If your American dream is to have billions of dollars that is more than likely not going to happen(not trying to put anyone down but those are the odds). My American Dream is to live in a stable comfortable home where i can provide for myself and my family without killing myself trying to do so.

  8. i agree with the people at NCCP, that the american dream is out of reach. And that with all the taxes today and with the income people are getting today is just not enough no more. And with all the cuts that the schools are having, we don't have all the materials and resourse.

  9. I agree with everything, the American Dream is out of reach .
& for school you do need the money to get to whatever school you need to go to but then if you dont, the poverty sets in .

  10. Poverty, upward mobility, and education are all connected throughout the meaning of happiness. In this article it states that the American Dream is even harder to achieve because we need money to be stabilize in our society. Likewise, the A.D. has recalibrated over time due to the fact that all we needed in the beginning was "The Pusuit of Happiness." Now in the twenty first century having more money has become mandatory, even if it means spending our money on unnecessary necessities.

  11. I agree with Cauthlen about the american dream becoming out of reach, because it was once looked at as having a good job. Now its if you dont have money your not living the american dream, and alot of people dont have money because of the reccession. So many people are in the poverty stage its hard to get the materials to get the right education.

  12. Being without an education can affect the American Dream depending on your depiction of the American Dream. Someones dream might only be to become a doctor, and without the proper education, that dream could be deferred.

Upward mobility could also be an important factor, again, depending on your specific ideals of the American Dream. If you think that income is an important factor of the American Dream, then mobility is essential.

-This is all connected to the American Dream . It's Saying that having Up-Ward Mobility , is more important than helping out the Poor . Like , people are so influenced on theirselves that they do not care or help out the Needed . It's the middle class and lower-income families that are getting their "American Dream" . i Think that we should all be equal and help each other out and not just keep people down .

  14. Cauthlen is right the American Dream has become unattainable.Poverty is themain cause, students are now falling behind in school because they cant afford the materials necessary to succeed. In our present times you need atleast a high schoo diploma to get a job anywhere. Our American Dream is to progress as a nation. How can we do that if tuition is constantly rising to go to college, stopping great minds from reaching their fullest potential.Upward mobility will never be possible if poverty continues to be an issuein America

  15. lets face it back in the day u could survive without an education, but that was back in the day. now a days wit out an education life is pointless in america.the ad is being affected by the rise of poverty because with no money people cannot pursue there dreams which leads to moral decline in a person her will start see him or her self as a failur.soo as a nation america has to find a way to lessen poverty in order to better peoples lives and better america.

  18. How poverty is now, I agree with Cauthen. We all need education, and how the incomes are lessened it affects how one works in school. Though hard work is the key to success, we need the money for materials (books, paper, pencils, etc.).

  19. I would have to side with Nancy K. Cauthen On her perception on the entire situation. The American Dream is very much so far out of react for a high percentage of american families. Education, Poverty, and upward mobility are all related to the American Dream in many ways. The reality is that there is families who live in poverty. Education is key because with out it it is next to impossible to achieve the american dream, EDUCATION IS MANDATORY in being the best you can be in life. As far as economic mobility goesss.......well i mean its just not going to happenn during this time, its nearly impossible to do.moving from one income group to another just isnt going to happenn now......

  20. Everything that was said in this article makes sense. It is not hard to tell that African Americans have a harder time then others do, therefore I am not surprised to see that we only make up for 1/10 the net worth of Whites. This situation defers our American Dream because it seems like society is holding us down in a way, which leads to us having a lower education and not reaching our American Dream.

  21. I agree with the article because i also believe that the economy is taking away so many of our oppurtunities when it comes to education and having access to all the other resources we need to reach this American Dream. In todays soceity i believe its true that education is not enough anymore but i also feel that we dont have very many other options that allows us to reach the American, therefore it is unattainable.

  25. i believe that the way we think about the A.D now has changed and because of that it has become unreachable. also other stars that made it with out an education like lebron, 50 cent, etc.have made it but the percentage of somebody being a NBA star out of college let alone high school is very small.its not likely for you to be a succesful rapper either.

  27. I believe that the AD can still be achieved with poverty. Most people believe that it cannot be achieved with poverty because they're looking at the American Dream, once again, as material wealth. Education is the foundation we need in order to be able to mobilize ourselves towards achieving the real AD.

  31. I get this article and what it is saying. Our Poverty, Education, and Upward Mobility has not been successful in the U.S. Why take money from us children? Also this talks about the African American have one-tenth of mobility and whites has a large body. Wow this article really tells alot. But I still really dont get it? LOL I think?

  32. The world in which we live in, is mainly effected due to the decrease of jobs, limited education to children depending on their wealth and if they have a home, and the income that rises higher and higher each year that makes americans be in debt and having financial problems.Children all around the world are not able to get their learning because they dont have a home, or the materials tnat we have as americans that other 3rd world countries don't have.

  33. I believe that we are in need of a lot of help. The gov. isn'nt giving us the help we need nd we as americans have to work hard for the things tha we want like the american dream. We do not have the mony nd jobs to provide for us nd also other immagrants is comin in to our country nd takin our mone/jobs.so i do agree with the article nd we as americans need to open up our eyes nd come together.

  34. I believe the American Dream is a personal dream , so i agree with the article in a sense . I agree that education takes a big part in the American Dream depending on what your personal dream is . These days the American Dream is based off cars and fancy houses , which require money - and now you dont really need a education to get money . I also believe it's overrated basically because the American really has no specific definition .

  35. I think that the American Dream is becoming out of reach, because prices are raising taxes are higher. Now people are losing there jobs so thats no income and people thats already working are making little income. Which is making the AD impossible to accomplish.

  36. I Believe That Someone Can Still Achieve The American Dream Even Though That Person Lives In Poverty Because All These People Are Doing Is Comparing The American Dream To Being Rich. Some Of The People In The World Today That Are Rich Came From Nothing , Now Look Where They Are , Living The Good Life , The American Dream .

  37. The American Dream isn't out of reach! To have a dream is what strives someone in life to never give up. Although poverty and education are big components to the American Dream it is only those who keep trying without them who achieve it.

  38. Society today affects the path towards achieving the American Dream to African Americans. Whites have more of an advantage because of our past. The past is holding us down and it makes it difficult for us to achieve it. Most people interpret the American Dream differently than others. Acheiving your American Dream is living a life that you picked out for yourself. Living a life that you are happy with. Even living in poverty and being happy at the same time can be your American Dream. Poverty and education are key points in the affect of your American Dream. It is your choice as to how much time and effort you put into your American Dream.

  44. I agree with a few other people about our wants and needs as we continue up and accelerate toward our idea of the ‘American Dream’. Then again I also agree with the idea by Cauthen that the ‘American Dream’ has become increasingly out of reach for most families. The ‘American Dream’ is being let down and skewed around because of poverty and education mainly. For instance when viewing information about poverty of children in poverty some specific individuals think they are living the ‘American Dream” just because there not in the same situation as poverty stricken people. Education is going down and becoming more sorry then informative and successful because a lot of people don’t see the long term out come and what they can achieve if they stay in school and get there grades thus far causing the number of holders of the ‘American Dream’ to fall.

The American dream has been postponed for now until we reach economic stababillity. The fact is that our country and our citizens arn't portraying the right mind set to each other, and we dont have enough leaders willing to step up and do something about it. This will be our upward mobilltiy when we are to focus on our kids educatian instaed of our physical appearance and our social status

  47. the music game is a prime example of how hard work sometimes does not pay off. People have to have the full package. having an education makes your hard working process run smoother and the struggle is much quicker. people have to understand that school is not for everybody but if your not in a position to say that then you need to go ahead and get your education. Education brings power.

  48. I think that you can work very hard all your life but you will not necessarily get everything you want by doing all that work ,its very unfortunate that that is the case for many people but not everyone can really live the American dream and i think poverty play a big role in people not being able to have that high class elegant lifestyle that they probably deserve because they worked so hard for it .
