Are people inherently good or inherently evil?

Reports: Tiger Woods checks into sex addiction clinic in Mississippi

Tiger Woods isn't in Orlando any more — he's at Mississippi clinic known for treated sexual addiction, two television stations are reporting.

Woods has checked into Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services in Hattiesburg, Miss., anonymous sources told stations WJTV and WLBT

Officials at the facility would not confirm Woods' presence.

Pine Grove is one of the top three sex-rehab facilities in the country, according to WLBT.

RadarOnline first reported Woods' status.

Pine Grove's recovery program for sexual addition typically lasts six weeks but can be shorter or longer, depending on a patient's needs, according the facility's Web site. Pine Grove treats other addictive disorders as well and offers psychiactric treatment.

Security around the facility is tight, WJTV is reporting.

Juniors,

Based on our reading of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown and our discussion of whether people are inherently good or inherently evil, what do you think about the notion of public good vs. private evil in terms of Tiger Woods? Is the perception of Tiger Woods tainted because of his "good" image in the public and his "evil" private infidelities? Can people be inherently good AND evil? Speak on it!

  1. I believe people think Tiger Woods is evil because of all the charities he has helped. And so they compare it to his sexual addiction. But they do not know if he has always had his addiction or if it is a newly acquired thing. They believe that because Woods is attending a prestigious sex-rehab facility he has serious problems. He could very well be determined to get well soon. People CAN be good and evil but it is dependent on them how evident each is. Some people can be both but they show very little of the good, or very little of the evil.

  2. I believe people look ay Tiger Woods and are taken aback because of the good deeds he has done. Yet when they hear about this addiction. But when they hear of a football player or an actor with a drug,an ILLEGAL drug, addiction they don,t say anything as it it was normal. Only because they are known for scoring touchdowns and delivering a good performance While as Woods is known for doing good and helping others so they juxtapose the good and bad and by comparison the bad looks worse.
I believe humans can be a mixture of good and evil. But at times one attribute is more excessively present. However, people compare these two and one seems more drastic than another.

  3. I think that Tier wood's is not shown as a " Evil " person persay, people only call him evil and what he did was bad because he wasn't only with one women, but h live's by societies code in america where he only is suppose to be married to one wife. In the public he gave charaties, had foundations that helped alot of people, and was a good role model in the magizines and tv. I Believe that a person can be inherently be a good person, but everyone has sin's. I don't think that the new's and tabliods were right by putting all of his business out there on the new's and now it makes Tiger look like the bad person , from catching him doing in the wrong.

  4. Tiger woods is to me inherently good but like we discussed in class we r born into sin and I believe that the sin that the world offers got him and he chose to become "evil" and cheat with his wife. He was a good person up until now evil caught up with him. He was doing so good and people saw him as the good golf player with the perfect cute little family and such a good man helping out charities but when the infedelity happened he becomes this evil Terrible guy. I'm pretty sure he wasn't like that when he was younger. So people are inherently(born) good but they all have sins and become evil oneway or another

  5. IIIIII THINK PEOPLE ARE INHERENTLY GOOD. I SAY PEOPLE ARE INHERENTLY GOOD BECAUSE WHEN UR NOT AWARE OF ANYTHING U MEAN NO HARM. WHEN UR BORN U DONT KNOW WHATS RIGHT FROM WRONG UNTILL UR CORRECTED. IF A PERSON WAS BORN WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD THEN THEY WUD B INHERENTLY BAD BUT THATS NOT THE CASE. PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHATS WRONG UNTILL THEY R CORRECTED. WOOTY WOOH!!!!! AND BOBBY JOHNSONS BABY! LOL

  6. Tiger Wood's "good" image is tainted because of his poor judgement. He will no longer be seen for his golf abilities, but for his countless affairs. Tiger is a good example of public good and private evil, because in the public eye he was portraying that everything was fine and dandy. Behind closed doors it was another story, full of lies and deceit. This does not make him inherently evil, people are allowed to make mistakes. It's human nature, but the difference between good and bad is feeling remorse. People are born inherently good, because when your born your a baby and all babies are pure and innocent. But later on in life you can be affected by the sinful behavior of those around you. So you can't be both inherently good and inherently evil. Your inherently good and tempted do to bad things from evil influences later on in life.

  8. I believe Tiger is still good. He is not inherently evil. He just made a real bad decision. His mind was corrupted by evil, but that doesnt make him evil. Tiger is a nice person, he gave money to charities and helped a lot of people. I would say he is good. People make mistakes and Tiger made a big mistake. Tiger admitted to his faults and saw that what he did was a big mistake. He took it upon himself to get help about his sexual flaws. To me that shows maturity and manlyness on his part. This is only one bad thing that Tiger has done his whole life and I don't think he should be labeled as evil.

  9. Tiger Wood's infidelities does not make him evil. It was wrong and very stupid of him to cheat on his wife knowing that he is a public figure. He did not necessarily have a 'good' image. He was never perceived as good or bad, but now to the millions of people who were his fans, he his protrayed as evil. People are called inherently evil because like their fathers, they might do bad things as well. However, everyone does bad things and good things. Being good or Bad is a choice made by the person, it's not given.

  10. In my opinion, though people to me are inherently good, i believe that we are born into a world of sin and it is up to us to decide whether or not we will let the temptation of sin get the best of us and give into the sins that constantly surrounds us. I think Tiger Woods is a good example of someone being inherently good, only because although he let his temptation overtake him, it is obvious that he realizes his wrongdoings and according to the article is making an effort to repair the damage he has caused. The fact that he's going to this " sex-rehab facility " shows that although he made a mistake, it is still in his nature to good and he is attempting to make a change by receiving the help he needs in order to get past the situation. Although im sure Tiger Woods' public reputation may be somewhat damaged, and many look at him in a different way, i still believe the attempt of being in a rehab facility proves that he has the ability to be inherently good .

  11. I believe that every one is inherently good but only do evil things because they were not happy with being good. Tiger Woods only did an evil thing and became unhappy with just one wife so had to do the evil thing and begin to sleep with other women. Tiger Woods doing this is just a mistake but has done good things like donating to charity and being a good role model with a clean slate have all came naturally to him.

  12. In my opinion, Tiger Woods is inherently evil. Who knows what he has been doing from his childhood until what has been put out. It is no excuse to say someone is "influenced" by evil. If this was an answer then everyone would have that excuse. If he was a good person he would ignore that influence and be a bigger person than all the sinners today.

  13. I personally dont care about the situation because i dont think its our business . His personal life shouldnt be the "okay" to determine whether he's evil or good . People feel they get to be upset with him just because he's a celebrity and its in our nature to judge when someone with high status does something out of character . When "average people" do what he did , the repercussions arent half as harsh . A sin is a sin , and EVERYONE does it , EVERYDAY . So just because he's in the lime light shouldnt influence you to believe his sins are greater than yours . I just think the whole situation was blown out of porportion , and people just took it as a shock that he did what he did . All men are capable of doing what he did , and so are women . If he's inherently evil for his sin , then were all inherently evil just as well . :)

  14. I agreed you with u Joshua, because everybody made a mistake in their life Tiger Woods is a good man and he made a mistake he should have told his wife the truth from the beginning. He is a good man who had a long run in his career.

  15. Well, to me it would be considered fake. Tiger Woods is known as a "Sports Leader" and he is not sending a good message to his fans, the public, and young people that may live up to him. a Public Good might as well be Public Evil not private because nothing is considered private in the Celebrity world. Nothing about Tiger Woods situration is tainted. People can be Inhertinly good and evil.

  16. I do believe Tiger Woods "good" image is tainted. Woods show that people are neither inherently good nor inherently evil, but they do have the intentions of being a positive person. For instance, Woods portrays a "good" image to the public eye with his incredible golf abilities demonstrating that an African American male can accomplish being successful. However, with one false move or technicality his credibility can be demolished. Percisely, the public find it their duty of nature to unmask and bring his misconceptions into the light. Judging his imperfection character proves that the public is the one who is trying to parade Tiger Woods as "evil."

  17. Tiger Woods is equivalent to Goody Cloyse in Young Goodman Brown because in the public he is portrayed as a good model individual who everyone looks up to but in his private life he does a lot of evil things that the public would not approve of. Tiger was once viewed as the american dream but with his latest secrets that have been revealed to the world his image has been tainted. Throughout his career Tiger has been inherently good and somewhat of an angel to the sports world but he also is inherently bad because he's been living a negatively driven double life that has now plagued him for money losses and huge endorsement deals.

  18. I strongly believe that in this case tiger woods can be in both categories of public good and private evil. Tiger before and still after the incident is known mainly for his success being the best black golf player in the world. When people think of Tiger that would have been the first thing people think about but then on the other side of the fence Tiger lived a double life. He lived the life we know and the privatly evil life he knows. Personally i think people are inheriently neutral meaning arent born in good or evil. I say this because people are not born into good or evil they pick it up when they're taught it so if people were taught the bad way of life they would follow that because thats what they have grown up on. It refers to being brought up on only good and not evil, you follow that of which your taught because when ur first born you dont think about your path of good or evil at 10 minutes old.

  19. Check me out, Tiger is neither, he's just a simple human being that makes mistakes like the rest of us. I say noone is really born good or bad, but are judge to be seen this way, based of the decisions we make. And Tiger is a decent man, just really made a poor decision, so in this case it may look bad, but that doesnt mean hes a bad person in general.

  20. People are inherently good and evil. In Sir tiger woods cause he is evil because of his high standing in the public eye. He is looked at as a role model so if his private life is as his public life he would be looked upon as evil. Those who have "power" tend to have higher expectations to live up too because of how everyone is always looking at them and trying to mimic what they do. And seeing how tiger is an African American professional golf player he has extremly high expectations to be this exemplary person who makes no mistakes. Tiger is good but he jus had a momentary lapse of judgement that lead him to evil

  21. I believe that people are inherently good but can be convinced or led to do evil things. We are born into a world of sin and it is our choice to decide whether we want to follow. I would now say that we are evil because of our acts , I would simply call it curiousity (curiousity killed the cat).

Of course in the public eye Tiger Woods was portrayed good because of his ability to play golf as well as he can. Obviously no one knew what kind of person he truly is or else this incident would not have been such a shock.

  22. I believe people are inherently good, but can sometimes be obligated to sin. No one is born perfect, but we all have our desires. to do something negative( weather its to ourselves, or to others). its easy to be persuaded to do something wrong, but we have the ability to do right, which is the inherently good part of our souls, doing wrong is just an option.

  23. People are inherently good. But based on the media, Woods never said he was a good person. They never asked about his background, all they worried about was his family and his career. Im sure Woods was inherently good until he was persauded by alot of women. Not everybody is perfect and everybody makes mistakes. Its just shocking for Woods because people looked up to him and it was a "big" mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  24. People are inherentley good, but the influence of others makes them evil. Tiger Woods' "public" good affects his "private" evil probably by the influence of others. Tiger Woods' actions are definetly influenced by others because he isn't the only man that take those actions. Theres a sex rehab for a reason.

  26. I feel that people are inherently good. But sooner or later they are influenced by something that causes them to do something bad. Not everybody is perfect, whatever T.W. does behind closed doors is no ones business but T.w.'s. But its one simple flaw and he shouldn't be seen as someone bad because he has a sex addiction does not mean that we have a say, to say if he is a good or a bad man. Its one flaw. and he should not be judged

  27. i think that ppl r both inherently evil. ppl have the tendency to do good things but overall ppl r evil. ppl have the knowledge of good and evil but evil is the easiest to obtain. it is normal to be publically good and privately evil because thats how ppl show the good in themselves

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think that Tiger Woods is inherently good he is a person that doesnt usually get in trouble. Since he made one mistake, people look at him as a negative person or for him to be inherently evil. Since he is looked upon as a rople model he is expected to make no mistakes. But i think he is still a "good" person.

  29. i think tiger woods is still good. he just got caught up doing something bad. people just assume and think thye no the situation. he probally had a reason for what he did. so tiger woods is still good to me

  30. I think that tiger woods isstill good in my eye he just did sumin wrong once and wedont even know if its really bad we dont know what was going on at home with him and his wife so he probably had a reason to so in my eye tiger woodes is still good

  31. I believe tiger woods is inherently good because before anyone knew about his sexual addiction he was known for being respectful, caring and the best golf player in the world. after when everybody found out about all the evil his was doing behind close doors and how he had to go to rehab to fix his sexual addiction. everyone start to judge him and think negative about him, but everyone is prone to sin no one is perfect and i feel others shuldnt judge him for one mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe that Tiger Woods' private evil has overridded his public image of good. Everyone wants to dwell on the one negative thing about him and forget all the good things he's done and accomplished. Tiger shouldn't be frowned upon by society because he couldn't resist temptaion. He isn't inherentl evil. everyoen is prone to sin. All of his fans and supporters should realize that he's only human and no humans are perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with christian Tiger woods is human and humans make mistakes. Woods for years has kept his record clean. The media was looking for the one thing to destroy his image and succeeded. All the good he has done is over looked just because he has a sex addiction

  35. continued....Its like this country is designed envy then obliterate some ones success. Yes, this sex addiction could be considered a private evil, but i believe he is still inherently good. The media just like the devil in young goodman brown is using a great leader like Tiger Woods to make humans seem inherantly evil.

  36. i think tiger woods should be left alone, he made a mistake and this is his own private matter that america is pocking their head in too. this private evil is over shadowing all the good he has done in the world. My perception of tiger woods has not changed at all i feel like he made a mistake, we are all human and we all make mistakes and he is even going to sex rehab to fix it which shows he is making an attempt to fix his problem. People can be inherently good and evil because we are tempted by evil and sometimes we give into that evil

  38. i feel that tiger should just ignore all the foolishness that people are sayin about what he did. my opinion is that his wife is just tryin to get money its freakin tiger woods of course the white girl is goin to want his money. if he had a black girl none of this would happen cuz he is not happy wit his wife so he had to get some love from somewhere else. tige does not have t go o a sex clinic just because his wife was not gettin no love from his wife so he got it somewhere else the dude was lonly i feel for him.

  40. I feel that people are inherently good but fall victim to wrong and "evil" temptations. mr.woods is showing that he is good person by getting help for his problem. we are all humans there for we are all venernable to mistakes. i think it shows if a person is truly good is they work to correct there mistakes and make an effort to change there wrong ways and that is what mr.woods is doing .
